Trams vs. Motorists

St. Petersburg is justifiably proud of its title as "the Tram Capital of the World". Our city has the world's biggest tram network, and trams are an important part of the history of the city and the daily lives of its residents. But in recent times this historical legacy is gradually being eradicated.

Motorists, the main wreckers of the environment, feel a certain discomfort because of trams, the prototype of ecological transport. The reaction of city hall: unconditional surrender to the automobile, the destruction of tram lines.

Conflicts between trams and cars also arise in old European cities. There, the problem is often solved by banning motor transport -- streets in the city center are reserved for pedestrians and trams. This creates a very pleasant and comfortable cityscape.

Unfortunately, in St. Petersburg such a possibility is not even considered and conflicts are invariably resolved in favor of motorists.
